So, a new ancient species has been discovered, known as the Homo naledi , or “Star Man.” It’s very human like, and is one of the biggest evolutionary discoveries in recent years from what I understand.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

They apparently had a burial ritual for their dead, much like we do today. To me, this is incredibly fascinating and cool, and a big day for science. Do you believe it? Yes or no? Why or why not?

Considering their possible use of rudimentary tools, something equally as simple to understand and maintain. Probably 1998 Honda Civics.

We’re assuming they buried their dead because lots of them were found in the same location in a cave system. It’s not so far-fetched when you think about how humans have had burial rituals from now stretching back to thousands of years before written history.

caesar? I find stuff like this quite interesting, my only gripe is the fact it’s a known thing burials weren’t solely a human thing. Neanderthals buried their dead

People are still going to keep claiming that evolution is false and that Earth is only a few thousand years old.

You should’ve felt the tension when I had my very-Christian parents watch the first episode of Cosmos.

Also, looking at the reconstructed image, there are a lot of similarities to the facial structure of both African and Asian people. Pretty cool, really.

Very cool! Just read about this on BBC news this morning. Why wouldn’t I believe it? What do scientists get out of announcing this kind of thing, aside from a little fame within their community and *maybe* a grant or two? I think the only people who have any business being skeptical are their jealous colleagues (with big brains and enough knowledge to discern the truth) and whoever decides to give these people accolades. Sounds like a ritual burial site to me! These finds are sketchy when someone thinks one example of a skeleton they found is a new species, but here we apparently have an entire floor full of bones, where each bone is represented well. A very cool find!

Fascinating. I think they need to get some geologists in there to figure out how much the cave may have changed over 2 million years. Just because it’s really hard to get in there now doesn’t necessarily mean it was as difficult back then. But yes, this is huge.

What I’m getting at is, if we have seen burial rituals previously in human history, it would make sense that our ancestors did something similar.

If I had cable or internet at home, I’d be watching the heck out of Cosmos. Also, yes, there are the radical creationists that believe all that. I was reading through CNN’s story on this, and the Facebook comments made me shake my head and facepalm. Believe what you want to believe, but please always keep an open mind that what you may believe as pure fact, may not always be. The one person, ironically enough, commenting on a Facebook post, either with a phone or computer, stated that science could burn and all science was fake. I guess communication through stone tablets have really advanced then? Technology isn’t science anymore, who knew.

But not to derail, this is so awesome. I’m definitely going to keep up with this.

The article I read had someone saying it wasn’t a new species, just an older version of a previously discovered species, so there’s still disagreement.

I have no problem accepting that some form of a divine being may have incited the Big Bang, because nobody actually knows. And probably never will know,

Evolution on the other hand, has far too much empirical evidence to be denied. There are still a few things about it we really don’t know for sure, of course. And again, we probably never will know for sure.

I don’t have a big take on this, despite being a biologist. Haven’t read about it before you posted this. I wonder to what extent this discovery is really a new species, assuming it is if it’s just another failed branch on the tree or if it’s an ancestor of something much more modern (us?).

It is pretty interesting. I personally like the stories behind the finds more than the finds themselves. Through their books Donald Johanson and Richard E Leakey have become men to idealize. I’m pretty sceptical that the bodies found were buried intentionally. 2 to 3 million years ago would be insane to say they had such thought as an afterlife with such small brains. It’s a provocative headline but I think the media is running away with that claim more than the anthropologists probably intended.

It was published in eLife . Doesn’t mean it is not valid, but they have a relatively low bar compared to most journals. I’ll reserve judgment on whether it's actually revolutionary for a bit, but new finds are always cool.

Yeah. I’ve never been one to deny evolution. I just view it as another tool of the creator. He wanted his stuff to work without him having to be bothered with making a new design everytime it didn’t....Evolution fills that role. It’s a self repairing, self correcting system.
